Blackletter calligraphy (also known as Fraktur, Old English, or Gothic calligraphy) is a centuries-old form of beautiful writing that has seriously stood the test of time. Originally used for medieval manuscripts, it is now used for everything from official diplomas to wedding announcements, newspaper mastheads, permanent tattoos, and everything in between. It is still relevant, dramatic, expressive, and commands authority.
Tools:
This video demonstrates the Pilot Parallel Pen which is one of my favorite calligraphy tools, and also the Marvy Le Pen Fine Point Marker for adding embellishments.
Tip for paper:
Since the Parallel Pen uses fountain ink, standard copy paper will bleed so I like to use a higher quality mixed media paper such as Strathmore VisionTM 98 lb Mixed Media Paper. Use a light box with the free practice sheets under your blank paper so that you can see the lines and trace the letters for practice.
Blackletter Characteristics:
Blackletter calligraphy is created with a broad-edged calligraphy pen or marker. It is upright, compressed, and requires tight spacing.
Pen Angle:
Keep your pen nib angle at a consistent 45º angle, this is how the thicks and thins are naturally produced. In this video for the word “Rebel”, you will see a slightly advanced technique of lifting one corner of the pen nib to create a longer thin line.
Letter Height:
Most blackletter calligraphy alphabets use 4 pen nib widths for lowercase letters. The customized “Rebel” word style in this video uses 6 pen widths with a 3.8mm pen nib to allow more space for embellishments. When using different nib sizes, create a vertical checkerboard pattern like the example in the downloadable practice sheets to create your guidelines.
