I am Sriram, 35 and live in the UK. I started smoking when I was 20 because it was cool and all my friends were smoking. Initially it was not a big thing and I would smoke one or two cigarettes a day, but very soon I started smoking 20-30 cigarettes a day. Smoking became my crutch for everything, I would smoke when happy, I would smoke when sad. I would smoke when calm and smoke when I was tense. I started to think of nicotine as a friend, a permanent comforting presence who would never let me down, always being there for me even if nobody else were around. Like most smokers I put my smoking first. Everything I did in life revolved around having an ability to smoke when I wanted.

Smoking affected my life in many ways. I got badly out of shape and couldnt run more than 10 secs without heaving and panting and falling over. I would interrupt very interesting conversations in order to leave the room to compulsively smoke. I avoided people who I deeply cared out just because they would call me out on my smoking. I developed a hacky cough which would erupt randomly and prevent me from speaking in important meetings or calls.
I made many attempts to quit smoking, I failed in most of them, often relapsing in one or two days. I failed, because I did not understand the science and psychology of quitting. I took up vaping, but ended up smoking the same number of cigarettes in addition to vaping because of the ease with which I could vape indoors. The first success I got was when I quite cigarettes to exclusively focus on vaping. However vaping did not change anything about the challenges i faced in my life, so I quite vaping as well. I tried all sorts of supplements and NRT none of which worked for me, I invariably wanted the real thing and went back to smoking.
