Donald Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal is now up in the air because of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling July 1 on presidential immunity.
The former president’s lawyers are pressing New York Judge Juan Merchan to toss his May 30 guilty verdict. They say the Supreme Court gave them powerful arguments by establishing that some “official acts” of a president are protected from prosecution.
Trump’s sentencing, originally scheduled for July 11, has been delayed to Sept. 18, so that the judge can consider whether the verdict should stand. Merchan said he will rule by Sept. 6 on Trump’s request to overturn the verdict. Trump faces three other criminal cases and is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
