part 1
an ignorant look at :
Rear Derailleur Shimano Alivio RD-3100 SGS (i.e. long cage)
I ramble on about RD-3100 while showing close-ups.
Trying to fit on Sora (compatible) drivetrain with 11-42 9 speed cassette
(i.e. a total mash-up).
Not got it going yet (but looks 99% good except catching sometimes .. i.e. potential for somersault catastrophe).
Whether it will fit my mash-up, who knows.
UPDATE Oct23 : Chain is to be on the top side of of that backplate mentioned.
My chain connector link was getting stuck on it with the chain under the back plate.
My understanding (from google bard) :
3100 is the latest Alivio drivetrain range (from about 2021 to now ?)
4000 was the older range (2016 - 20 ?).
Shimano Cues :
Shiamano mtb brands Alivio, Acera, Altus ... and road bike Sora, Tiagra, Tourney (?) will all be stopped being made, and will be replaced by Shimano Cues, which is meant to make everything compativle.
My gossip knowledge (?) is that Bike manufacturers are starting to use Microshift rather than Shimano, as Microshift make drivetrain stuff compatible etc. So Shimano are going the same way (i.e. make mix and match possible).
I could be wrong.
But all the Alivio etc stuff will be around for years, cos it's still ok.
