Every fortnight, trained volunteers from the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home take a shelter dog to visit the residents at the Bexley Care Centre. Expert dog trainer and pet behaviourist, Lara Shannon, talks to Bexley's lifestyle coordinator, Tam, about the many benefits of this wonderful program.
Tam explains that the benefits of the therapy dog visits are twofold. They bring joy to the lives of the aged care residents, many who previously had dogs in their lives and unfortunately can't bring them to an aged care home. Therapy animals are renowned for turning a sad day into a happy day. For the dogs themselves, it helps to socialise them, so really it's a win-win for all involved.
However, if you are struggling with a dog that has anxiety or is reactive to other dogs, download this FREE extract from Lara Shannon’s best selling book Eat, Play, Love (your dog) to assist.
