Last night we spotted several juvenile crayfish in one of our tanks that we had stocked with pregnant Australian Red Claws (Yabbies).
Once crayfish eggs begin to hatch the young stay attached to their parent until big enough to fend for themselves.
Unfortunately, once they leave the protection of their mother, both mother & other adult crayfish are prone to be cannibalistic.
Other juvenile crayfishes will also feed on each other, especially when they moult their shells.
To keep losses to a minimum we strip the hatching crayfish eggs off the parent & then remove the parent.
The young crayfish (crawfish) are then let together in a tank to feed on zooplankton/ algae. Once they have doubled in size they will then be added to a larger tank before being moved outside to a large grow-out pond.
