Semi-Dead Mall Video: Westgate Mall in Bethlehem, PA is a combination strip mall and indoor mall. The lighted signs can be deceiving, as there are many vacant stores along the front of the entire mall and along the back of the interior...not to mention the 800 lb gorilla named Bon-Ton hiding in plain sight.
The former McCrory's was the last place in the Lehigh Valley to have pay-toilets. (McCrory's / JJ Newberry's was a five-and-dime with a lunch counter and used to be where Sky Zone is now.)
The mall opened in 1973 and in 1977, a fire destroyed 18 stores in the interior section of the mall. After 1 a.m. on 12 February 1977, the burglar alarm went off at Kay's Jewelers alerting authorities to the fire, which struck 3 alarms and summoned all 7 of Bethlehem's engine companies. The fire was ruled as arson.
