There was little indignation across the EU when Austria's far right swept 26% of the vote in the parliamentary election on October 15. It seems Europeans are now used to populist rhetoric. In Western Europe, the backlash against multiculturalism is well under way and in central Europe, there’s increasing opposition to the liberal order that Brussels represents. Whatever happens now, Austria's Freedom Party is assured more influence in the debate on migrants, borders and national identity.
