It’s been over 70 years since an aircraft first “broke” the sound barrier and traveled faster than the speed of sound. Traveling at supersonic speeds creates what is known as a sonic boom. This is when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound causing shockwaves to form and travel away from the aircraft and later merge to generate very loud distinct sounds that can be heard for miles.
While you are probably familiar with the term sonic boom, you may be unaware that commercial planes are currently restricted from flying faster than the speed of sound over land. This is because sonic booms would be extremely disruptive to both humans and animals. These restrictions, however, have presented a major hurdle in making supersonic flight available for commercial use.
Wouldn’t we all like to get to where we are going faster and safer? NASA's first piloted experimental aircraft the X-59 will feature innovative technologies that will reduce loud sonic booms to a quiet thump and improve efficiency. What this means for normal travelers is less time in the air and faster flights. A cross country flight from LAX to JFK currently takes about 5 hours, with a supersonic flight it would cut that time almost in half, roughly taking about 2.5 hours.
