"The history of the Shoah was built on the memories of the survivors - but the era of witness is coming to an end..."
Twenty years ago Simone Veil, the Holocaust survivor who went on to become the first woman President of the European Parliament, spoke powerfully and movingly at the Council of Europe about the duty of teaching the events of the Shoah once the last eyewitnesses have passed away, the day when "books become the sole repositories of our memories".
This archive footage was shown at a special ceremony to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January 2022 as part of the winter plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
