FEATURED LOCATION: Chilkat River, Haines, Alaska.
FEATURED SPECIES: Sockeye Salmon.
Part 1 of 3.
We start off visiting Haines Packing Company to follow wild caught salmon from the ocean as they make their way through this state of the art fish processing plant.
Here, Sockeye Salmon fillets, Sockeye Salmon and Chum Salmon Roe, and King Salmon smoked are just some of the many fish products processed for sale.
Then we join Bosh Hotch, an elder of the Alaska Native Village: Klukwan ("The Village that has always been."). I am privileged to help retrieve his 24-foot fish net from the Chilkat River which is loaded with Sockeye salmon!
This reminds me of my Hawaiian resource gathering ancestors, where fishing for one's family is not only a privilege, it is an utmost necessity and responsibility.
