The golden age of piracy refers to a period between the 1600s and the 1700s when maritime piracy was at its peak. During this time, pirates operated out of havens in the Caribbean and preyed on ships carrying cargo from the Americas to Europe.
Our Popular culture loves pirates. It is fascinated by the romantic notion of those who lived outside the law, plundering ships and taking what they wanted. Pirates are often glamorized as freedom fighters, standing up to the tyrannical governments and corporations of their day.
In reality, pirates were often brutal criminals, preying on innocent people and causing havoc wherever they went. But they were also skilled sailors and clever strategists. They had to be, in order to survive in the dangerous world of piracy.
One of the most important parts of a pirate ship was the ship itself. A good ship could make all the difference in a battle or a chase. Here we discuss some of the most famous pirate ships of the golden age of piracy.
