As the lines between religion, politics and philosophy grew more jagged in the late Roman Empire (4th-5th century - not 3rd as I said in the vid!), the Egyptian city of Alexandria stood out as a microcosm of this imperial turmoil. At the heart of it was a woman, Hypatia.
In the face of many difficulties Hypatia navigated Alexandria into a position of great renown and respect, and her eventual death became a tragedy to be remembered for hundreds of years. Today she is celebrated as a mathematician, a philosopher, a martyr, and an icon - for independence of thought and resilience of spirit.
In this video we'll learn about a woman who changed the course of history with her actions, and intellectual thought with her understanding of heliocentrism, gravity, and mathematics.
While she may not have been the first female mathematician (we think this went to her slightly earlier peer Pandrosion), Hypatia is remembered for her cross-disciplinary intellect and even cooler, may well have known Pandrosion! It's nice to imagine the two debating in Alexandria together. In all, Hypatia was a remarkable woman who deserves every bit of attention she gets, from Charles Kingsley to 'The Good Place', though maybe not that horrible passage from John of Nikiû.
