In January of 1918, a deadly H1N1 strain of Influenza called the "Spanish Flu" began sweeping across the globe. This flu, also known as "Strain A" or "Avian Flu", took its toll worldwide, infecting mainly young adults, and even South Carolinians had to face this flu without any real forms of medicine. Learn how the Pandemic first arrived in South Carolina, along with its socio-economic effects, and measures taken to combat its spread.
There are several theories as to where and how the 1918 Pandemic started, however the truth is, nobody knows for sure. Some say it originated in the U.S., and others say Europe, or China. The first confirmed case in the U.S. was in the Camp Funston Army camp in Fort Riley, Kansas, which leads some to speculate that the pandemic originated here in North America. Other historians and scientists believe it started in Europe, and migrated over to the U.S. Of the pandemic's three waves, the second "wave" was the worst, and those who caught H1N1 during the first wave had already developed immunity.
