Al-Jazeera has launched an English-language news channel. The launch comes a decade after Al-Jazeera began broadcasting in Arabic from its headquarters in Persian Gulf state Qatar.
In the years since, the broadcaster has often angered officials both in the region and in the United States.
Wednesday's broadcast began with live feeds from such locations as Gaza, Jerusalem, Darfur and Zimbabwe. There was even a breaking news report on a tsunami warning in Japan.
Al-Jazeera, which is bankrolled by Qatar's royal family, says its signal will reach 80 million households, mainly in the Middle East and Europe. It hopes to steal viewers from CNN and the BBC by giving the world's 1 billion English speakers news from a non-Western perspective.
