Gordon Banks was arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the world by 1970 and England were the reigning world champions by the time that the World Cup came back around in Mexico in 1970. All the major players remained: Charlton, Moore and Hurst and England qualified for the quarter finals, despite losing 1-0 to the much-fancied Brazil. England took a 2-0 lead over West Germany, a team out for revenge after 1966, but had Peter Bonetti in net, instead of Banks after the goalkeeper had come down with an illness. A couple of high-profile errors later and West Germany won 3-2. Would a quarter final win have ensured England’s progression through the qualifications for 1974 and 1978?
