Set to complement a refresh of the gas-powered XC90 SUV, the 2024 Volvo EX90 follows the compact XC40 Recharge to demonstrate the high end of the brand’s electric-market intentions.
Volvo is clearly taking aim at consumers’ range anxiety with a hulking 111-kWh (107 usable) battery rated for a 600-kilometre range, per European WLTP standards. Assuming an average 11 per cent difference in WLTP and EPA test-cycle ranges, that will likely translate to a North American rating of 534 kilometres, or an estimated calculated efficiency rating of 20.8 kW/100 km. EX90s will ship ‘hardware-ready’ for bi-directional charging, suggesting that an eventual software update will enable the vehicle to pump electrons back into other vehicles — or even a blackout-stricken home.
