Karain is 30 km away from Antalya Province of Turkey. It is one of the largest natural caves in Turkey. It has been understood that the cave, where scientific excavations have been carried out since 1946, was used as a settlement 500,000 years ago.
Karain Cave is an important Paleolithic center for the history of Turkey and the Near East. During the excavations in Karain Cave, findings that provide reference to a great time period from the Lower Paleolithic Age to the Late Roman Period were obtained. The use of the cave in Antiquity was mostly in the form of an Adak Cave (temple), and there are Hellenic inscriptions and niches on the cave's forehead and outer walls.
WHERE 500 THOUSAND YEARS OF HISTORY WAS ILLUMINATED
While most of the Paleolithic caves known on earth represent only one period, Karain; It shows an uninterrupted stratification as the Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic Ages. The data obtained from these layers are especially important in terms of illuminating the connections between Europe and the Near East and giving an idea about migration routes. The artifacts found in the cave, where the oldest known human remains of Turkey were captured, again represent the first examples of Anatolian art. The cave also contributed greatly to Turkey's Pleistocene Archeology with its fossil remains and absolute aging results.
It is recommended to the World Heritage List as a mixed site due to its natural and cultural characteristics, along with other caves around Karain.
- As a result of the excavations carried out in the Karain Cave, remains of many ages were found. These ages; It can be listed as Middle, New, Copper Stone and Bronze Age. This indicates that people lived in the cave 500,000 years ago.
All the artifacts unearthed around the cave are very important to have information about Anatolian art. From the Karain Cave; Traces of many animals such as hippopotamus, lion, giraffe, elephant and hyena were found.
- Karain and other caves around it are nominated for the World Heritage List thanks to their cultural and natural features.
- Painted ceramics, the most important feature of the Chalcolithic Age, were unearthed from the cave and are exhibited in museums. Thanks to this, it will be possible to understand how the people who lived in the Chalcolithic Age lived near the cave.
