칩4 가입 임박,예비회의 관건은?
Welcome back.
A semiconductor partnership proposed by the U.S. to include South Korea neighboring Japan and Taiwan is receiving quite a bit of media attention amid the rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
For more on the implications of this alliance I have Professor KWON Seok Joon at Sungkyunkwan University joining me virtually.
Professor Kwon it's a pleasure.
I also have Professor Renee Bowen at UC San Diego live on the line.
Professor Bowen it's been a while.
Welcome back.
1) Professor Kwon, exports especially those of chips have been keeping the South Korean economy afloat.
That being said, what can you tell us about the global market shares of the country's memory and logic chips?
And for the sake of our viewers who may not be familiar with the technological jargon, what is the difference between memory and logic chips?
2) Professor Bowen, pundits say semiconductors are key to economic security.
Do you share this view?
3) Professor Kwon, against this backdrop, the Yoon administration is mulling over joining the U.S.-proposed Chip 4 alliance along with neighboring Japan and the island of Taiwan.
First then, what would be the merits of partaking in such an alliance especially for South Korea?
4) Professor Bowen, could you tell us a bit more about the economic merits of such an alliance amid this current climate of geopolitical uncertainties?
5) And now Professor Kwon, for the sake of consistency, let's touch upon the potential demerits of partaking in the Chip 4 alliance for South Korea.
6) Professor Bowen, as a scholar in the field of and speaking purely from that perspective, would it serve South Korea well to join the alliance or to avoid it?
7) Professor Kwon, in the long run, what are the prospects of this alliance offsetting bottlenecks and advancing self-sufficiency?
8) Professor Bowen, Beijing insists the Chip 4 alliance is part of Washington's efforts to deny China access to advanced technologies and equipment.
What are your thoughts?
9) Professor Kwon, moving forward, the Yoon administration has pledged to further foster the country's semiconductor industry.
What do you believe is essential to ensure this national goal?
10) Professor Bowen, U.S. President Joe Biden has also signed an executive order to implement the CHIPS and Science Act.
What are the implications of this latest development?
