You’re on an X-wing fighter coming out of hyperspace – and into a barrage of Imperial ships.

That’s the set-up for the updated Hyperspace Mountain debuted to media Thursday night along with other “Star Wars” twists added throughout Tomorrowland for Disneyland’s Season of the Force, an “overlay” that will be in place for at least a few months.

The retrofitted Space Mountain re-opens to the public Monday.

As the ride begins, the coaster climbs the tracks with 360 degrees of video showing stars whisking by – simulating hyperdrive – accompanied by the rousing “Star Wars” anthem from composer John Williams.

Then, out of hyperspace, the music transitions to the chilling theme of the Dark Side.

And an onslaught of Imperial fighters descend on the car, blasting away.

In a moment hearkening to the nostalgia of “Return of the Jedi,” Admiral Akbar utters a favorite line among “Star Wars” fans: “It’s a trap.”

From there, it is much the same Space Mountain as always: dips, turns, whipping around at roller coaster speeds.

But, you’re flanked by rebel X-wings as you battle TIE fighters and try to blast a Star Destroyer.

Toward the end of the ride, the car speeds toward a collision with a TIE fighter – before dropping below the enemy ship moments before impact. It’s a scene reminiscent of another classic Disney ride: dropping beneath the boulder on Indian Jones Adventure.

“Let’s blow this thing and go home,” a voice, that of Blue Leader, says.

An explosion and camera flashes later and you’re back in port.

Disney hasn’t said how long Hyperspace Mountain will be in place. Fast Passes will continue to be offered for the ride.

Though no regular folks were allowed in Tomorrowland, the exitement in the park about the coming Force was clear among the guests.

“I'm very excited,” said Marc Rosenberg, an annual pass holder from San Diego, on the new theme for Hyperspace Mountain. “Ghost Galaxy (the Halloween theme) was cool, but I think this new one will be better.”
