When it comes to fighters, games like Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, Samurai Showdown, etc come to mind. There's one other game in that genre that stands out like a sore thumb though, unfortunately, not many people are aware of. And that game is the most awesome Waku Waku 7 by Sunsoft.

This game is pretty colorful, humorous, and lighthearted compaired to most popular fighting games these days. The storyline is simple: Collect all seven legendary Waku Waku balls to get your dearest wish granted. Each of the seven main characters carries a Waku Waku ball, so you have to defeat six of them to collect the ones you need.

Speaking of the characters, they are my favorite part of the game. The characters in Waku Waku 7 are the most original, non-cookie cutter characters I have ever seen in any fighting game. Ever. Even if they are parodies of your typical anime characters. I mean, have you ever played a fighting game as an android maid who throws cats, dogs, and frying pans at you, and stabs you with syringes? Or have you ever been this large purple bunny-like monster who fights with a small child on his back because he's trying to help her find her parents? Even the most cookie cutter character in the game is not your typical generic guy. The cast is amazing.

So as you've probably notice, the first thing in the video you see is the name "Neo-Geo." Yes, this game is a Neo-Geo/MAME game, which is probably why it's not very well known. It was eventually ported to the Sega Saturn, but from what I hear, the port was terrible with horrendous loading times. HOWEVER...some odd years ago they released a port of the game packaged with Galaxy Fight (Waku Waku 7's prequel, which was kinda bad) for the PS2! I just placed an order for this game because it is too amazing to pass up. And yes, the PS2 version is a perfect port. Everyone who reviewed it gave it 5/5 stars. It's that good. Though, it's also only available for Japanese machines. So...yeah. I swear, they keep all the good stuff in Japan...

But yes. If you like fighters, then you will like Waku Waku 7. And yes, Slash is my favorite character in the game.
