I’ve once made a video talking about why Noh masks look so scary. But I soon realized that there is one more traditional Japanese craftwork that is considered to be creepy and scary… it's the 市松人形 Ichimatsu Ningyo (doll), a kind of Japanese doll. Just like the Noh masks, they are obviously not meant to scare anyone, but why do we often see them in horror scenes in anime and movies?
So today, I will explain about the history of Ichimatsu dolls and then talk about the three reasons why they are considered to be objects of horror today.
At the end of the video, I will also talk about the truth behind why it is often said that “the hair of Ichimatsu dolls will grow,” so I hope you can look forward to that.
