A stem wall foundation is a commonly used system in residential construction in SW Florida. The purpose of the stem wall is to get the house finished floor elevation or what we refer to as the FFE to the height needed. Homes are elevated to a height to reduce the potential risk of flooding. The concrete block sits on top of the footers . Footers are typically dug into a property building pad. The footers are pored solid with concrete and also have rebar that runs through it to give it support. The stem wall is the block that sits on top of the footer. The amount of blocks stacked to get to the height is the number of courses. The rebar from the footer will also run through the block work and then poured solid with the top beam to tie the structure together. This video shows 3 blocks stacked so it is a 3 course stem wall.
