Laura Laura Bravely Challenges Gabriel Feraud in a Duel Matching Wits
The Duellists' is a 1977 classic Napoleonic Wars history movie by Ridley Scott.
The story is based around Joseph Conrad's 1908 novella, 'The Duel'.
Two French Hussars are at odds with each other during and after the Napoleonic Wars; they fight each other in a series of duels.
The movie presents a series duels fought between the two main characters spanning two decades.
Armand d'Hubert (played by Keith Carradine) vs. Gabriel Feraud (played by Harvey Keitel).
The feud has given the pair of fighters somewhat notorious reputations.
Just before the brutal sabre duel the pair will fight in a cellar, there is an attempted intervention to stop it by Armand D'Hubert's mistress-lover. Laura (Diana Quick), an army-camp follower (these followers were women who followed their soldier-husbands/ lovers on their military campaign re-deployments).
Laura has a limited but central role in the movie, acting as a fulcrum point, popping up out of nowhere a couple of times as the potential pivotal point in Armand's fate. The movie quickly establishes her as a well-seasoned loozy character who has passed herself into the arms of various soldiers. She seems intent on gaining Armand's affections, even though he has no obvious intentions of committing to her beyond their romantic flings; ie, he doesn't take her bait.
In a desperate attempt to hold onto Armand, and stop the upcoming duel which might kill him, Laura takes it upon herself to make a surprise and secretive visit to meet in person with Lieutenant Feraud, the antagonist rival and nemesis of D'Hubert.
She is fearless in her ambition and boldly makes her way to the army field-tent of Feraud where their own duel will take place.....
The strength and popularity of this movie are the varieties of contrasts and duels of varying natures beyond the fight scenes.
Duels of inner demons, clash of class and cultures, political ideologies, personal commitments, .... and honour.
