The Voynich Manuscript has been dubbed the most mysterious book in the world. Many code breakers have tried and failed to decipher the strange language contained in the book.

The manuscript consists of over 170,000 unknown symbols and illustrations, but an alphabet of 20-30 symbols would account for much of the text.
At first glance, the illustrations look like plants, but curiously most of them don’t really match known species. The illustrations shed little light on the precise nature of the text, but seem to indicate that the book is split up into six sections. There are many theories regarding the subject matter of the book. The Voynich Manuscript may have served medicinal purposes, or perhaps contain information related to cosmology.
Wilfrid Voynich first discovered the Voynich Manuscript in 1912, but the book dates to the early 15th century (making it pretty ancient). For context, other events around this time were Machu Picchu being constructed, Guru Nanak was born and Columbus landed in the Americas.
Feuding warlords in Italy were known to use cryptography to keep their messages a secret. At the time, there was a "codes arms race", which explains why the Voynich Manuscript is so hard to crack.
Some people have obsessed over the book and spent their entire lives trying to decode the mystery. Even American and British code breakers from World War’s 1 and 2 were stumped. This has led some to believe that the book is a hoax.
A popular theory is that a well-known alchemist in fact wrote the book at the time. However, rather than filling the book with real information he instead had the book created to look ancient and full of wisdom. This would give the illusion to his patrons that he was basing his assumptions of their health on something concrete. This would mean that both types of theorists are technically correct. While the book doesn’t contain any real information, it was still willfully created and served a purpose.
One of the symbols contained in the Voynich Manuscript is present in three other codes from that time. While the language has some similarities to European languages it varies in several important ways. Some letters appear in every single word. The distribution of letters within words is rather peculiar as well. Some appear only at the beginning, some only at the end, while others always appear in the middle section. The book is also more repetitive than European languages. Sometimes the same common word appears up to three times in a row. This would be the English equivalent of saying “the, the, the”.
My personal favorite theory is that the book was written by aliens and left for humans to find. Perhaps the book contains vast knowledge of the intricate workings of the universe, and even some secrets about life here on Earth. This book definitely needs to be the subject of a sci-fi film ASAP!
