Dermot Shea, New York City Police commissioner, tells TODAY that while daytime protests over the weekend were largely peaceful, “when it got dark it got ugly, and it got ugly quick.” Regarding video of police cars plowing into crowds, he says, “anyone looking at it has to be troubled by what they saw,” but adds that police responded appropriately in the great majority of incidents.
