Perfectionism often starts in childhood as a way to cope with environments where love and approval depended on achievements. This can stem from critical parents, high expectations, or emotional neglect.
At the root, it’s all about our nervous systems.
Perfectionists tend to have elevated cortisol and adrenaline levels due to an overactive fight-or-flight response. Everyday challenges and the fear of failure can trigger this, causing chronic stress.
Additionally, perfectionists chase dopamine hits from achievements. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure, provides short-term satisfaction, driving a constant need to achieve.
