This video presents a draft analysis of a paragliding incident. The goal is to understand what has happened and to derive measures to avoid this type of situation happening again to me or other pilots. The first step is to gather all the information form the pilots perspective at the moment of incident and present it to you. Then, I gather your feedback, thus please comment on whatever issue you see in the video and how to mitigate it. THANK YOU! Finally I do a full video analysys.

THE ANALYSIS
==============================
== Summary.
Flight perturbation followed by significant altitude loss and landing on a reserve parachute. No injury nor property damage.
== Pilot.
Paraglider pilot with IPPI 4 licence and approx 150 h total flight time on pragaliders gathered over 10 years, including:
- approx. 100 h in the 12 months preceding the incident and
- approx. 100 h on the type of paraglider and
- approx. 50 h in stronger thermal conditions, cross country flight, incl. approx. 20 h in the week proceeding the incident.
The pilot absolved an IPPI 4 training in the months preceeding the incident. No experience with SIV training , acrobatic flight, nor larger perturbations in flight, beyond small collapses The pilot just started aggressively using speedbar.
Pilot was in good physical shape, however felt tired in arms after longer flights. The pilot has flown paragliders almost everyday in the month preceding the accident, and thus had been a bit mentally tired of flying on the day of incident.
The pilot is a sailplane pilot with approx 500 h recent total flight time on gliders, mostly in cross-country flights over plain terrain.
== Equipement.
- Paraglider wing Paratec P44, DHV 1-2, EN-B, approx 13 years old and approx 150 h flighttime at the time of incident, checked, in good shape.
- Harness Supair approx 15 years old, checked, in good shape.
- Reserve parachute: checked, in good shape, and repacked 1 month before the incident.
== Weather conditions.
Nice moderate July thermal weather with moderate approx 20 km/h wind from NW, approx 10 o'clock from the flight direction just before the perturbation.
== Place
Annecy in the Northern Alps, strongly frequented by hobby and professional paraglider pilots. Pilot had approx 50 h of recent flight time in the area on paragliders, and limited past experience in sailplanes.
== The flight
Second flight of the day after the first flight in the area surprisingly ended in an outlanding, due to downwinds/ lack of lifts that the pilot did not anticipated.
After second takeoff at approx 1200 m, quick ascendance to approx 2400 m, and crossing to the north. The time of the incident was approx. 5 pm local time approx 30 min after takeoff.
== Incident (Preliminary, as perceived by the pilot during the flight. Will be completed based on your comments.) PLEASE COMMENT ON WHAT YOU SEE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.
- Starting at [ Ссылка ] pilot was surprised by the unusual flight attitude and by following some 2-3 gs of centrifugal accelerations
- At [ Ссылка ] pilot was focused on stopping rotation.
- At [ Ссылка ] pilot noticed astouned that the hight of neighbouring peaks is reached and throws the reserve parachute.
- At [ Ссылка ] pilot notices that the wind blows him towards the ridge, and thus tries to disable the main wing to stay over the plateau, however doesn't know how.
- The wind calms down as the height decreases,
- At approx. [ Ссылка ] the pilot realizes that he may land on the roof or on the animals and releases the main wing to drift him away but there is no more wind.
== Aftermath
No damage to livestock, property, nor equipment, besides contamination with bullshit. The pilot continued to fly few days after the incident, with significantly reduced level of mental comfort, avoiding excessive use of speedbar and avoiding areas of strong thermals.
The pilot will participate in SIV trainings and wants to learn basics of paragliding acrobatics in a controlled environment.
== Conclusions (Preliminary, will be completed based on your comments.)
The main cause of the incident are:
- inappropriate level of pilot skill to the flight conditions - fully accelerated flight in thermal conditions and
- inability of the pilot to recover from the perturbed flight conditions.
== Acknowledgments
The pilot is deeply thankful to the flight instructor who incited him to repack the reserve parachute weeks before the incident.
The pilot is deeply thankful to the flight instructors and pilots who explained the incident to him and advised him after the incident, thus enabling his prompt return to paragliding.
