Replicating a child’s spine might not be the first thing you’d do with a 3D printer, but it helps our pediatric spine surgeons be even better. 3D printing allows our surgeons to provide a more personalized and safer spinal surgery.

In Lane’s case, developing a three-dimensional version of his spine allowed his orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Sumeet Garg, to perform surgery for his scoliosis while minimizing the risk of unnecessary bleeding from Lane’s hemophilia diagnosis.

With the model, Dr. Garg and our hematology team successfully corrected Lane’s spine by creating a plan and following the model during surgery to ensure a precise fit. 3D printing not only helped to avoid potential error during surgery, but allowed Lane to get back to the things he loves like playing basketball and riding his dirt bike.

“The last time we’ve seen them might’ve been just in the hospital,” says Dr. Garg. “When they come back a year after surgery, you can hear about their trips, and their sports, and their performances and so it’s a real joy to hear what they’ve accomplished.”
