Pulled Rib Muscle Symptoms
A pulled rib muscle is called an intercostal muscle strain by doctors. Intercostal muscles are the muscles that lie between your ribs, attaching them to one another. They stabilize your rib cage and upper body, and also help you breathe.
Symptoms of intercostal muscle strain include the following
Pain
Sharp pain may occur at the time of an injury, like a fall or getting hit in the rib cage during sports competition. Or it may come on more gradually from the strain of lifting something that's too heavy. Repetitive activities, like chopping wood, can also cause pulled rib muscles. Discomfort is likely to feel more intense when you twist, stretch, breathe in deeply, cough, or sneeze.
Tenderness
The injured area will be sore to the touch.
Swelling
There will probably be some swelling between and around the affected ribs.
Difficulty Breathing, Shortness of Breath
You may find yourself taking small, shallow breaths because it hurts to breathe deeply. This can leave you short of breath.
Pulled rib muscle symptoms can resemble symptoms of other disorders and conditions. It's best to see your doctor anytime you're experiencing pain in the area of the chest or rib cage.
