Loosen up the lower back and learn about the quadratus lumborum muscle (QL). If you are struggling with a deep, aching pain in the sides of the lower back when sitting/standing, transitioning from sitting to standing, or when trying to bend over, then your QL muscle may be an issue. Some people think that their “disc bulge” or “SI joint” is causing them pain, but it may be that your QL muscle is worsening those issues or is the sole cause of your pain.
Use a lacrosse or tennis ball in the lower back for this massage. I decided to talk in this video, so I got quite a bit of detail in about the exercise. Watch it a few times in order to understand how this exercise is done.
We have found that people can get golf-ball sized knots in the QL muscles that feel like solid bone. This often happens in people with a lumbar spinal curvature that is straightening or reversing. These nodules can be beaten up with deep tissue massage, but they will continue to come back if the lumbar curve is not introduced and the lower back is not straightened. We have posted some videos in the past to help you restore your lumbar curvature and strengthen the lower back. Search for these in the exercise library.
