Continuing my exploration of the hidden Gems and History in the County of Surrey and I’m in the Village of Brockham to take a short Walk up to the remains of Brockham Limeworks and the Quarry. Decades of Industrial Quarrying have shaped the landscape and many of the Plants here only exist because of the old Chalk Quarry. Once the area bustled with activity, there were a network of narrow-gauge rail tracks which carried the Chalk to two Lime Kilns. Here the Chalk was burned to produce quick lime which was used to make Mortar and Fertilisers. The site reached its peak at the end of the Victorian Era although digging continued until 1936.
