“Why is My Car’s Air Conditioning Not Blowing Cold Air?”
Welcome to Mercie J Auto Care, Where Compassion and Craftsmanship Come Together. I'm Rick Smith, ASE Certified Master Technician.
There’s a number of possibilities. The basic way the system works is we have Freon or Refrigerant in the system. We have a Compressor that circulates it inside the car into an Evaporator and that Refrigerant then goes out in front of the car to a Condenser. The refrigerant acts as a wheelbarrow, we load it up with heat inside the car and then we dump it outside the car. So, first of all, is everything coming on? If not, there may be an electrical problem preventing the compressor from turning on. If that is all working properly, we could be low on refrigerant. You need gauges and testing procedures. We can sometimes have a problem if we don’t have enough air flow over the front of the car and the AC system can shut off. So the fans out in front of the radiator have to be working properly.
Next, if everything is actually working good and the system is getting cold but you aren’t getting cold air then the problem can be in the ventilation system. Inside the car we have an evaporator which gets cold, we also have a heater core that gets hot. We have a small door called a blend door witch directs the air flow over the evaporator or the heater or blends the two depending on the temperature we request. Any problem here can create warm air even though the refrigeration system is working well.
