French troops are engaged in multiple operations. The fight against terrorism is the single most important objective for all military operations deployed oversea, as well as at home. France has been at war against the Islamic State Organization, also known as Daech since September 2014 – a campaign called Operation Chammal. It is led by the French forces in coordination with its allies in the region to provide support for Iraqi forces. More than 1,000 French soldiers are participating.
In September 2015, the operation was extended to Syria. In all, France has deployed 14 Rafale and Mirage 2000D aircrafts based in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. 3,700 Iraqi soldiers were trained by French soldiers, part of the 18,600 trained by the coalition.
A different theatre, and a different operation: Barkhane , which began on August, 1st, 2014.
Operation Barkhane has seen 3500 French soldiers deployed in the Sahel-Sahara region. It’s based on a partnership approach with the main countries of the Sahel-Saharan Africa: Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso.
There, the French force uses:
17 helicopters.
6-10 aircraft tactical and strategic transport.
4 fighter aircraft.
5 drones.
No fewer than 200 armored vehicles.
In Central African Republic, Sangaris operation is made up of 350 French soldiers, who provide operational support to 12,500 peacekeepers in the country.
France is also one of the main contributing countries of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Its force of nearly 900 soldiers helps to ensure the cease-fire.
French soldiers also participate in a European mission against piracy in Somalia. Its resources include the permanent deployment of a naval frigate, as well as the ATL2 maritime patrol aircraft based in Djibouti.
Of course, on top of all this, there is the military deployment in France. 13,000 French soldiers are directly involved in protecting the country. That includes 7,000 who make up the Sentinelle operation against terrorism.
