Sara has to participate in an online discussion forum. Don’t worry Sara, just follow these tips:
Read and follow the directions--In your post Show that you read, understood, and are thinking about the material in a critical manner
Answer the prompt
Provide examples and evidence
Show what you think about the evidence
What does it mean?
How can it be applied?
What is it similar to?
Do you agree or disagree/why?
How can it be evaluated? Is it good/bad, why?
Post well before the deadline-- Leave yourself enough time to check back in to respond to others
Have a conversation! -- respond to others’ posts AND those who reply to your post
When you respond, continue the conversation by:
Asking meaningful questions:
You sad “x,” do you mean that….?
If we take what you say about x and apply it to ____ what would this mean for ____?
What would happen if...?
Why do you think...?
What examples were you thinking of?
Provide a detailed personal experience that others could respond to without getting off topic
synthesize information you’re covering in the course:
this reminds me of...
provide other examples from the sources that's relevant to the conversation
I think another example could be... what do you think?
Have good nettiquette:
Be kind, inclusive, and aware of your audience--if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it online
Watch your tone: avoid humor/sarcasm because it’s difficult to understand the tone of a post.
Proof read/read aloud to catch grammatical/spelling mistakes
What not to post.. anything that stops the conversation
“I completely agree! Great post”
Repeating exactly what was already posted
Critique of what’s wrong or missing in the post
