Acoustic Guitar Floating Back Braces - Making Trevor's Weissenborn 09
This guitar uses a floating back brace system credited to Jeff Traugott and was incorporated and refined with his permission. This instrument differs slightly in that it uses two floating braces, rather than his typical single. I did this to further increase the structure of the back because it will bear the weight of the instrument and artist during a performance. This has been huge improvement and I plan on using this method on every instrument moving forward not only because of the structural integrity but the ability to tune the back off of the sides.
This video shows laminating two .125” thick strips of cedar in a 15’ radius dish to match the dome of the back. Once the braces are notched and these curved braces glued in the back is locked into the shape it wants to be, no longer relying on sides to keep it in check. The braces are then capped with another thin strip (.080” thick) to reinforce the joints and visually clean it up.
If you’d like to use this method I’d recommend contacting Jeff and asking permission/let him know. He generously allowed me to use this method and I am grateful!
