Versus between the original Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal and it's second version the Bluesbreaker 2 BB-2. NO MODS.
SG - Modded JCM900 (for accepting the pedals in a better way) 50W head on Clean (low preamp gain (5), higher Master volume 4/5) - 2x12 Greenback - Mic in front.
Which is the best? Is there a pedal better than the other?
Let's call the original the "BB1", and the newer version "BB2".
Well, when you try boths, the first thing is the BB1 weird controls.. The gain knobs acts on the last quarter or something like this.. The volume needs to bet set very high.. At noon, you get a thin, anemic tone. It kills everything. The bb2 shows way better pots range. Is more effective.
When setted well, The tone feels the same with a bit more mids on the BB1. The BB2 is a bit more scooped here, but when you play, feels much fuller, more sustain, the attack is better. The BB1 tone seems to have something behind it, a bit off "harsh" "fuzzy" thing, behind the tone. Like a blended signal. The bb2 go further in the gain possibilities for lead tones. At full on the 1, it's noon on the second.
Both are really great, but the bb2 is way more versatile. The Boost mode and its transparency is a real bonus, because you can use the bb2 two different ways to make your tube amp shine. At higher volumes on the amp, with the boost mode, it's really transparent and natural. Amazing tone.
A soon as you raise the voulme on it, the drive shines, gets full and rich. The bb2 character is amazing.
The BB1 is not produced anymore, harder to find, the price is higher than the 2. But if you think of the tone, the BB2 is as good as the one, and even more. For way cheaper, you have the great Bluesbreaker tone. For me, if we only talk about sound, and not about collectible, spending hundreds on the BB1 is useless. The BB2 make the job the great way.
And about Msm workshop it's my french workshop, dedicated to pedal mods. I have tried hundreds of pedals since 20 years now.
I make a mod for the BB-2 called "BallBreaker" (you can see the demo on the channel, i'll post a new one soon (03/2022 when i write this). It adds a lilttle bass and fullness to both modes and make the BB2 even better. The pedal is on my personal board since a few years, and will definitly stay!! Vive Marshall !
