Cartoon Network faced great challenges in 2020 – schedule controversy, middling and even destructive new shows, and HBO Max siphoning off content. And that was before factoring in the pandemic and their anti-racist activism PSA that wasn’t the best received. In this retrospective review of how the channel fared in 2020, I discuss their new series in ThunderCats Roar, Tig N Seek, and The Fungies, point out their continuing pain points, such as their schedule problems, programming burn-offs, and lacking response to the year’s crises, and take stock of the channel’s plans to change, through integrating HBO Max and creating new series such as preschool entry Batwheels and We Bare Bears spin off We Baby Bears. It didn’t seem that Cartoon Network was all that interested in helping themselves stay afloat in 2020, which makes 2021 even more perilous and potentially disastrous.
