A reworked and reuploaded version of my previous Millennium Tower video from February that I had to remove due to a pervasive audio issue. This has now been amended, and while the Millennium Tower isn't technically a lost place due to it not having ever been built, I feel it qualifies by virtue of what it could have been, as well as the destruction of the Baltic Exchange building that sat on the site before it.
Hello, and welcome back to Places - Lost in Time, a series that looks back on the tale of places and locations that have existing within living memory or photographic record, but are now lost to the pages of history.
This week, we look into something that was never actually built, but if it had of been would have become the 6th tallest building in the world, and would have loomed above the London skyline at least 500ft taller than the nearest comparative structure - this skyscraper being simply dubbed the Millennium Tower.
A concept that has long held my fascination, the idea surrounding the tower came into being following the partial demolition of the historic Baltic Exchange in the ancient City of London by an IRA terrorist bombing, and would have stretched 92 floors skyward hosting a variety of functions including office space, a hotel, luxury apartments and a top floor restaurant and observation deck, only for the scheme to fall rapidly out of favour when the practicalities of building such a mammoth megaproject faced the harsh realities of London's unique situation.
