I bought my first LCD monitor in 2002... 20 years ago. I have 7 screens in my office. I have been doing digital art since way before it was cool.... and despite all the awesome tech available I still see a lot of beginner artists end up with monitors which are not really going to do the job.
If you are serious about digital art, either as an aspiring pro or a hobbyist... the monitor is so important. It's the window to your art. It's how you view and interact with everything you do.
Steve Jobs of Apple fame... famously said, people will still use desktop computers in the same antiquated way people still drive trucks. The world will move on to tablets and laptops and phones... and only a select few will still actually need the power of a proper computer.
... Well that's you! We are that select few. You are a modern day digital truck driver.
If you want to create awesome art, make sure you can see it properly. And as the future moves towards high resolution, high dynamic range, high contrast... it will become more and more important for the creator to have tools that do the job.
How to select a monitor is actually pretty simple...
1 - Make sure it's an IPS panel
2 - Make sure it can at least display 100% of sRGB & Rec.709 Color Space (Higher than this is better, and will become vital going forward, Adobe RGB, Rec.2020, and DCI-P3 are good Color Spaces to look out for when checking out specs of a monitor, although currently they tend to only be present on higher end monitors)
3 - 4k is pretty useful! Personally I recommend starting to create art that is as high resolution as you can manage. 4K+ screens allow us to view all the details in an image at once, and will allow you to start thinking about the surface of the image (the textures and details which are often absent in older digital art).
Good Luck & Happy Drawing!
