Inside Out 2015. In the mind of a young girl named Riley, personified emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—guide her actions. Her experiences become memories stored as colored orbs, with the five most important ones forming "core memories" that power her personality islands. Joy leads and tries to limit Sadness's influence, viewing it as a burden.
When 11-year-old Riley moves from Minnesota to San Francisco for her father's job, she struggles with the new house, her father's busy schedule, and unfamiliar surroundings. On her first day at a new school, Sadness turns joyful memories sad, causing Riley to cry in front of her class. Joy's attempt to dispose of the sad memory results in the core memories being dislodged, disabling the personality islands. Joy, Sadness, and the core memories are sucked out of Headquarters.
With Joy and Sadness gone, Anger, Fear, and Disgust take over, but their attempts to make Riley happy backfire. Riley grows distant from her family and friends, and her personality islands start crumbling. Anger suggests Riley run away to Minnesota to restore her happiness.
Joy and Sadness, navigating long-term memory, meet Bing Bong, Riley's imaginary friend, who helps them try to return via the "train of thought." After various mishaps, Joy realizes Sadness's importance in expressing Riley's needs. In the Memory Dump, Joy and Bing Bong attempt to escape using Bing Bong's wagon rocket. Bing Bong sacrifices himself so Joy can escape.
Joy reunites with Sadness, and they return to Headquarters to find Anger's idea has caused Riley to become depressed and board a bus to Minnesota. Joy hands control to Sadness, who reactivates the console and prompts Riley to return to her parents. Sadness reinstalls the core memories, transforming them into bittersweet ones. Riley confides in her parents about missing her old life, and they comfort her.
Joy and Sadness work together, creating a new core memory that blends happiness and sadness, forming a new island representing Riley's acceptance of her new life in San Francisco. A year later, Riley has adapted, made new friends, and found new interests. Inside Headquarters, her emotions admire her new personality islands and use an expanded console that allows them to work together harmoniously.
