This historical documentary brings back to life the incredible story of Ida Lewis, a woman lighthouse keeper in Newport, RI, who became a national celebrity. She saved 18 lives, although unofficial reports suggest as many as 36. The film is an intimate portrait of Lewis' life from age 15 to 69 (1857 to 1911) and the courage, passion, and humility she brought to her work as a lighthouse keeper at a time when women had virtually no rights as citizens. Ida's story was largely forgotten but is now being told here and in a book written by Lenore Skomal, who is interviewed extensively in this documentary.
