The heavy cruiser field starts to get a lot more crowded at Tier VII. New British heavy cruiser HMS Surrey must compete with the likes of Japanese Myoko, American USS New Orleans, Italian Zara, French Algerie, and German Yorck. How does she stack up?
Defense
+ HP pool is pretty healthy for the tier, and comparable to other heavy cruisers. Myoko's nearly 40,000 HP remains king, but Surrey's 35,000 HP is nothing to sneeze at.
+ 152mm citadel belt armor is best-in-tier, but it's deceptive. Her citadel spaces are actually quite small, and extend only from underneath the stacks to just forward of her aft turrets; that's the only place she has this thick belt. If you've seen my First Look video on Italian cruiser Zara, you've heard me gush about how her armor configuration makes her the best protected Tier VII cruiser. Surrey does not wrest this crown from Zara, despite the marginally thicker belt armor, because she's so very thinly armored just about everywhere else. I mean, look at these turrets: 25mm all around for a turret housing a pair of 203mm guns. Myoko's turrets are this lightly armored, yes... but nearly everyone else puts a proper glacis plate on the turret face. Even the triple 152mm turrets on HMS Fiji have a 102mm glacis on them, so it's not even a national flavor thing.
+ 22% torpedo protection is best in tier.
+ Surrey's AA is actually pretty solid, an is roughly equivalent to that of Tier VII American premium USS Boise. Her long-range aura is quite average, but her mid-range aura packs a solid punch. Her short-range aura is similarly above average. Her main AA protection is invested in these 40mm Vickers 2-pounders.
Offense
+ Main battery wise, Surrey brings 4 twin-barreled turrets of 203mm guns to the table. This is the identical main battery type and configuration as her counterparts Yorck, Algerie, and Zara. She reloads these guns in 13 seconds; again, fairly typical when compared to the other nations. She's only able to get 14.8km range out of them though, which is absolutely worst-in-tier. If you thought the range on Zara's guns was bad, say hello to Surrey. Even Myoko out-ranges this thing.
+ Her HE shells hit for about the same as those of the Americans and French, 2850 per shell. AP shells are notably worse in terms of damage-per-shell, but they'll still do good work against enemy cruisers once you get the timing and lead right.
+ Torps are same as Fiji: 8km, 62 kt speed. She gets one extra tube per side, packing a quad launcher port and starboard (as opposed to Fiji's triples).
Consumables
+ Surrey has access to only Damage Control Party, Repair Party, Hydroacoustic Search, and Spotting Aircraft.
+ Her heal is the British regular cruiser heal, same as Fiji. Used wisely, these will absolutely keep her in a game longer than most other same-tier cruisers. The only tech tree cruiser with a heal at Tier VII is HMS Fiji; premium-wise, USS Boise, Nuevo de Julio, and Duca degli Abruzzi also get a heal. Either way, heals on a Tier VII cruiser are not common, so a getting good results out of Surrey is going to depend partly on good usage of her heals.
+ The hydro is identical to British destroyer hydro, so it's great for defense, but less useful for hunting down targets in smoke.
