A Ryanair passenger plane was being forced to land in Belarus two years ago after the authorities in Minsk gave the false pretext of a bomb warning. A Belarusian journalist Roman Protassevitch was forced off that flight and promptly arrested. The 27-year-old was sentenced and given eight years in prison on charges of conspiring against the state and slandering President Alexander Lukashenko. This for his coverage of the mass protests in 2020 which followed on from the country's disputed election. Opposition figures have said that issuing this verdict on World Press Freedom Day, shows the Belarusian regime's disregard for press freedoms.
