The Reichstag building at Berlin houses the German parliament since 1999. Severely damaged by allied bombs and Soviet artillery during WW II, it was part of western Berlin since 1945. The Reichstag was partly restored in the sixties and early seventies although there were only some yards to Berlin wall, the iron curtain. At this cold war time the parliament met in Bonn. The dome was then rebuilt by the famous architect Norman Foster in the nineties after the German reunification. The dome itself is an absolute architectural highlight, a steel construction with mirror- and glass-elements, a diameter of 38 meters (approximately 125 ft), and a height of 23,5 meters (77 ft) over the flat roof. It reminds me a little of M.C.Eschers drawings, the people walking up and down in a double helix.
