On long holidays, National Freeway No. 5 between Taipei and Yilan can be notoriously congested. But Taiwan’s highways bureau said that before 4 o’clock today, traffic was about the same as a typical weekend. The bureau took special measures to ease traffic, including the introduction of cruise-style shuttle buses that ferried tourists between attractions. There were also additional train services. Traffic volume on the nation’s freeway was down significantly this year compared to the first day of Dragon Boat Festival last year. The bureau attributed the decrease to upcoming tests in the nation’s secondary schools.
