(14 Feb 2022) Throngs of people gathered at the Beijing Winter Olympics media centre on Monday waiting to catch a glimpse Japanese-two-time gold medalist figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu.
Hanyu waved to excited fans as he left a news conference, many screaming with delight as he passed by.
"All Chinese people love him," one media centre volunteer said before running back into the crowd.
Hanyu missed his chance to win his third Olympic gold this year.
The 27-year-old was supposed to open his short programme with a quad salchow, but his blade hit a hole in the ice and he aborted the jump.
Instead of a chance at the first three-peat in almost a century, he did not medal at all.
Instead, American figure skater Nathan Chen took the gold medal.
Nevertheless, adoring fans said they still admired Hanyu's sportsmanship, and others his good looks.
"He looks like a prince coming down from heaven," one fan after she managed to snap pictures of him.
