Steve Strandemo was one of the pioneers of professional racquetball. Originally from St. Cloud, Minnesota, he graduated from St. Cloud State University where he was inducted into their hall of fame years later in 1994. His first career was teacher, which is clear in racquetball as well, as Strandemo is the author of several books and dozens of videos. I just subscribed to him at "Steve Strandemo Racquetball" on YouTube.
Here is Steve Strandemo's first instructional video ever. I met him in 1974 at Mel Gorham's Racquetball Club in Pacific Beach, California, when he was #3 in the world. Ektelon had just come out with a copper-colored aluminum "Strandemo" racquet. I was a new fanatic to the sport and Steve had recently relocated to San Diego, the Mecca of Racquetball in the 1970s and 1980s. My dad had given me a Yashica movie camera, complete with dissolve, slow motion, fade in/fade out, so I decided to use it for a high school project.
I went to Mel Gorham's and asked for a pro (since they all practiced there) to help make an instructional video. The guy at the desk introduced me to Strandemo. Unfortunately, I cannot find the reel-to-reel tape of his voiceover (movie cameras were silent in those days), so for now I did a voiceover myself. Hopefully, next time I'm in San Diego I can get Steve to re-record. Maybe he even knows the name of his sparring partner, who I think was Pete. The pros normally didn't practice with each other, to save their secrets for money matches. But they would find a top amateur who was fast and hit well to work out with.
I showed this to Steve Strandemo a few years ago and he thought it was okay. We talked about making more videos together, but since I don't live in San Diego any longer, it didn't happen. I'm happy to see that he's still at it, and I hope you enjoy his channel, plus the classic tournament videos on my channel.
