My mother had a BEAUTIFUL singing voice. She set out to be a singer and sent her demo to Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. After listening, they offered her a spot as one of their back up singers. My grandmother was a Baptist evangelist and my grandfather a Methodist minister; they forbade her to sing for the ''world'. That ended that.

Born August 1946 in New York, New York ,Valerie Simpson was discovered by Nick Ashford while singing at White Rock Baptist Church. The duo would go on to make BEAUTIFUL music for themselves and others for decades. In 1966 the couple joined Motown Records and wrote songs:
Aint No Mountain High Enough,
Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand),
You're All I Need (To Get By) among others. One of my favs by them is ''Solid''. Ashford and Simpson are one of the best music duos of all time.~~Shannon
