According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 53 million people in the U.S. live with a mental illness and about 50% of them are not receiving the help they need. In recognition of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Month in July, CVS Health joined Mental Health America to discuss the stigma of seeking mental health care and how they're working together to address mental health care inequities in historically underserved communities.
Moderated by Jessica DaMassa, Health Innovation Reporter, our panelists included Joneigh Khaldun, M.D., Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer, CVS Health; Jill Carlton, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Behavioral Health Associate Manager, Aetna, a CVS Health company; and Allissa Torres, Director of Mental Health Equity, Mental Health America.
